Soviet Anti Drinking Posters

Drunkeness or alcohol intoxication is a touchy subject. Not so much for the Soviet propaganda poster artists and Communist Party idealogues. They saw anti drinking campaigns as utmost important work of the state and didn't spare any embarassing messaging in their anti drinking posters.

They advised against it but also shamed drinking very sharply. See below for 50 Soviet anti alcohol posters of all varieties here. Some stark and some quite funny. We have also added a couple of Soviet alcohol brand adverts too for good measure. Here are all our 35+ Russian propaganda posters categories and subcategories we have please follow this link.

We will ship your Soviet alcohol poster internationally to North America and Europe. We have canvas, lux paper and framed options.

Do Russians Really Drink That Much Alcohol?

They do drink more on average historically and that is due to their specific social norms, high availability of alcohol and cultural-historical practices. There is a caveat though - when the times get tougher alcohol consumption spikes very significantly. Like for example that's exactly what happened around the time of the disolution of the Soviet Union and the subsequent transition years. So there is a correlation between the relative lower economic development of Russia as compared to Western Europe and the US. This is reflected in the Soviet Union USSR posters art too - there are many of them! So appart from the socio-economic dimension there is the culture and habbit side of it - Russians just love a drink and vodka in particular: at pretty much any occasion or without one.

So Then Did They Try Prohibition In Soviet Russia too?

Yes, they did try prohibition of alcohol. It began already in imperial times and lasted into the first years of the USSR until Lenin's death. Tsar Nicholas II introduced it in 1914 and Stalin hastily abandoned it in 1925. Why did he do that? Again, remember alcohol consumption is correlated with harsh living conditions and times were harsh after the First World War and the Russian Civil War. Obviously they couldn't enforce it and not least of all the Soviets needed the money from duties - the country was nearly broke.

The problem - to people's health, the health system, worker productivity, criminality and what not - continued. So it had to be fought somehow. That's how this famous poster art category emerged - out of necessity. It would result in hundreds of Soviet era propaganda posters fighting the scourge of alcohol and alcoholism being created. The Soviet anti alcohol poster flourished as artists and propagandists struggled to solve an unsolvable problem of enormous proportions.

Here is our 3 part series on the origin and history of Soviet poster art (1918 - 1950s):
