Communism and Socialism were conceptually intertwined in the Soviet posters. The former was an utopian goal and the latter was a stepping stone (and the then current system started by Lenin after the October revolution) to achieving it. Therefore communist posters of the time would acknowledge steps being taken to achieving the Communist utopia, have aspirational slogans, celebrate achievements on the way to Communism (from Socialism) or depict the class enemy - Capitalism and capitalists.

So What is Communism?

The communist societal system is such that in it there is no state and there are no classes. Everyone is equal and they work as much and as well as they can. In addition everyone receives from the commune/community as much as they need. Communism as a form of government was defined in the ideas by Karl Marx, which he outlined in The Communist Manifesto. The Communism posters in this category contain many political posters to do with voting and elections, The Communist Party of the Soviet Union CPSU, struggle against Capitalism and imperialism (enemies of Socialism and Communism), leaders of the USSR - particularly Stalin posters and Lenin posters (as these two had personality cults and represented the revolution and the struggle towards achieving Communism).

Socialism - Merely a Phase of Achieving Communism

Socialism referes to a system of government where the means of production (the economy) are state owned and controlled. In order to organise the Soviet state and society you needed central planning and a focus on wealth redistribution. There wasn't such thing as private enterprise in the Soviet union.

The Communist Party of the Soviet Union CPSU

So there is Socialism and Communism very briefly. These were ideologies and systems of government. But there was also the organisation that practically controlled everything from the top - the Communist party. The way it was supposed to work (according to Lenin's postulates) was that internally party members would democratically take decisions and then unanimously execute them on behalf of the party. Naturally, given the power leaders like Lenin, Stalin and top apparatchiks (at all levels) accumulated meant Lenin's vision didn't quite work as intended.
