Cold War History in a Word

The Cold War period refers to the open antagonism between the Western bloc (USA, Europe and allies) and the Eastern bloc (Russia, Soviet Union and allies) that lasted from 1947 to the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. Formally the beginning of the Cold War began with the announcement of the Truman Doctrine on 12th of March 1947. These two blocs had massive nuclear arsenals and in addition open armed conflict and a repetition of the world wars wasn't desired. Hence happily there wasn't a direct war.

President Harry S. Truman announces to Congress he is seeking aid to Greece and Turkey. This is what became the "Truman Doctrine" speech and marked the beginning of the Cold War. March 12, 1947 A year later Stalin calls the Marshall Plan a US scheme to "enslave" European countries in a 1948 speech.
